Can someone filing for bankrupcy be denied and why might that happen?

I don’t understand your question. Are you saying you’re only $1200 in debt or you only make that much?
To answer the question, yes they can deny it, or they can exclude things. If you ran up credit cards outside your normal usage within a few months of your bankruptcy they might not allow the debt. If they suspect fraud of any kind they can disallow it. There are several things that aren’t permitted at all, such as taxes.

I get your question now. I did my own Chapter 7. I had to really focus and the forms, etc., and gave me quite a brain-ache, but you don’t have to have an attorney to do it.

You can file for bankruptcy by yourself in most states. You can purchase the kit from the court system and follow the instructions. Then you are just paying the filing fees and not the attorney fees. Yes, you can be denied a bankruptcy. They may restructure your debt so that all is paid back over a period of time…but at least the creditors can no longer call you. They will check the use of credit in the pass few months to make sure you are not attempting to defraud. To determine if you qualify for bankruptcy, one of the things they will check is your income and another are your assets.
BE HONEST on your forms. It won’t help to try to mislead the court and could end up costing you more than money.

Im not sure what you mean by the $1200. If you are referring to legal fees and filing, many attorneys will provide a free consultation and only collect if you go ahead and file. They may even allow a payment plan. Good Luck.
