If you have decided to file chapter 7 bankruptcy, is it worth it answering collection agency calls?

how to file for bankruptcy
xyz asked:

I ignore collection agency calls because i have $40,000 credit card debt and am unemployed and i also have a gastro-intestinal illness that is incurable. Based on my illness and unemployment i see no other option but to file for bankruptcy protection.

I get lot of collection agency calls, but i don’t pick up the phone anymore because i am about to file bankruptcy in few days time. Is it worth it picking up these annoying collection calls now?

Also, it would be good not to lecture me by saying —- how dare you get so much debt or get a job. Most of this debt piled on by medical bills of my gastro-intestinal illness and i could not get health insurance from anywhere due to pre-existing clause. Also in a recession which is about to become depression, I am sure it can be understood that finding a job is not easy.

  2. I am in almost the EXACT situation!

My mom has Chrons and I was laid off because I had to take care of her after surgery. Im in 40k debt and going to file in May once I can pay the attorney.

I changed my phone number and made it non published because they call me at 11 PM and wake my mom up when she is resting. They call as early as 6AM! I am not putting up with them anymore because regardless of how many times I tell them I have no money, checking account to make post dated phone check, or debit card they dont take no for an answer.

  3. Actually it is worth answering, explain that you are filing and they will stop calling (unless you dont end up filing) It makes life easier and less stressful not to be getting these calls at all. Good luck with it all, and I hope after you file and the debt is gone, you can breathe easy and end up successful!

  5. I wouldn’t bother answering the phone at this point.

Also, do you have insurance now to cover your illness? If you are still racking up medical bills that are going to go to collections or be in the bankruptcy, you might want to wait to file.

  6. I am sorry for all that you are going through. If you are filing for bankruptcy the best way to get them from calling is to let them know. You can let them know not to call anymore and give them your attorney’s telephone number.

  7. Don’t be afraid to answer the phone, it’s not going to bite you. Just give them the name and phone number of your attorney, then hang up.
